Porteous Sports is a CEF program that provides schools with some much-needed sports and playground equipment. Once selected, the schools then work within an established budget to customize their wish list. In addition to having resources for the children at recess or P.E., many are able to utilize this to create or expand their sports programs.
In the Spring of 2023, students from Saint Teresa of Avila School and Our Lady of Peace School were recipients of sports and playground equipment. Hula hoops, basketballs, soccer balls, tether ball and volleyball systems were just some of the many items the schools received for the children to enjoy.
Joanne Testacross is the principal at Our Lady of Peace School in North Hills. She joined the school in 2020 and discovered that the school had no equipment at all for sports teams and recess.“I don’t know where we would be without the Catholic Education Foundation, in many ways.
This particular grant has filled the need for students to get play equipment into their hands,” said Testacross.
“The idea of sports equipment for children is not frivolous. It’s a key component to their development. So without that equipment, it’s very hard for them to develop their hand-eye coordination, their sense of sharing and the idea of what sports is actually about.”
The CEF Porteous Sports Program is made possible by the Porteous Family Foundation.
