Plugged In, Yet Disconnected?
“We are very blessed at Our Lady of Grace School to offer a one-to-one iPad program for students in grades K – 8 and a complimentary technology program that compliments our educational program for students. The transition to distance learning was very seamless for us and our students. Students begin their mornings with work that each teacher sends out the night before. This work includes textbook work, digital work, pre-recorded video content, and live Zoom instruction. Students enjoy live Zoom instruction in Art, PE, and Library, in addition to their core subjects.
One of the biggest issues that students and parents are facing with this “Safer At Home” order is the disconnected-ness to the school community. While students appreciate spending more time at home with their families, there is a yearning for the experience of community that we once took for granted each day at school. We are doing our best to meet this need by hosting daily live Zoom webinars with our student council that provides a sense of normalcy to our students and parents at home. Students begin the work day with our OLG school prayer, pledge of allegiance, special announcements, daily birthdays, and a special message from the principal and vice principal. We also host a spirit theme each week and ask parents to send in photos of their students studying at home dressed in that theme. These photos are shared each morning with the community and on our social media site. This has proven to be a great way to continue that connectedness we all feel the absence of during this time.
Our motto at Our Lady of Grace School is “A Tradition of Academic Excellence.” We have a proud heritage of producing graduates who, rooted in faith, excel in academics and leadership. Our students thus understand the importance of hard work and service. While this new environment has disrupted the normal course of our days, our students are showing an outstanding effort despite these challenges. We are also grateful to our wonderful parent community who even prior to this has been a pillar of our community. They continue to be incredibly supportive of their children and our school.”
