Dr. Susan Mescavage Welsh was raised to embrace all educational opportunities. A first-generation college graduate, Susan is thankful for the sacrifices her parents made for her to receive a Catholic education. Her mother, forced to flee revolutionary Cuba at the age of 10, was taught English when she moved to the United States. That instilled the value of education within Susan’s family.
Susan graduated from St. Joseph High School in Lakewood and received her undergraduate degree at UCLA. She achieved a Doctorate in Education from Teachers College at Columbia University and taught at Saint Monica’s Preparatory. Susan and her husband, John, are parishioners at St. Monica in Santa Monica.
“I am determined to make all schools, especially Catholic schools, accessible for students whether they are immigrants, low-income, afflicted with learning differences or simply struggling in school. Education is the hope and promise for all of us.”
